Walter Bruce Willis, a West German-born actor, was born in Idar–Oberstein West
Germany on March 19 1955. He was the son of Marlene Kassel (from Carneys
Point), and David Andrew Willis (from New Jersey), who lived on a military base
in the United States. The family moved to the U.S. soon after he was born.
Willis was raised in Penns Grove by his mother working at a bank, and his
father, a welding, was a factory worker and welder. Willis began to show an
interest in dramatic arts during his high school. He was "discovered"
when he worked in an New York City cafe. In the following years, he appeared in
numerous off-Broadway productions. He was bartending when a casting director
saw his style and asked to cast him as a bartender in a small film. Willis was
a candidate for a variety of film roles, but was not acknowledged. He
eventually got the role of David Addison, a private eye, alongside Cybill
Shepherd, in the romantic comedy series Moonlighting (1985). His sarcastic
humor and wittiness as a P.I. is a highlight of his professional career. Some
believe it's an opportunity to practice to practice for Willis his role in Die
Hard (1988), in which he fought a gang international of thieves who were
stealing from the Los Angeles skyscraper. The actor reprised his role as
McClane in the sequel, Die Hard 2 (1990) that was set at snowbound Washington's
Dulles International Airport as a group of renegade Special Forces soldiers
seek to get back an infamous South American general. Strong box office results
prompted another sequel, Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995) and this time with
co-star Samuel L. Jackson as an obnoxious Harlem shop owner who accidentally
gets into helping McClane during a terrorist bombing campaign on a scorching
day in New York.
